Ada Lovelace was born on December 10, 1815 in London, England. She is the daughter of the famous poet Lord Byron. Lord Byron was hoping that his wife, Lady Annabella Byron, would give birth to a boy, but was rather disappointed that the baby turned out to be a girl.

Ada’s original name was actually Augusta Ada Byron. Later, after she married, she became the Countess of Lovelace, so she is known as Ada Lovelace. Ada’s mother left Lord Byron in the same year Ada was born. He left England for good as a consequence of the rumors going around about why his wife left him. He died when Ada was only eight years old. That is an example of a tragedy in Ada’s life. Ada’s mother went to her parent’s house after she left with Ada, who was only a baby at the time.

Lady Byron pushed Ada to learn science, logic, and math. This motivated her to work hard and achieve her goals. Her mother gave her many tutors so that she would work even harder. She was privately taught these subjects by Mary Sommerville, William King, and William Frend. Sommerville later became a close friend to Ada. Sommerville also introduced her to a mathematician named Charles Babbage. Babbage later became impressed as Ada’s mentor.

Thinking Outside the Box

Ada Lovelace’s thinking outside the box is actually the characteristic that she is famous for. In her time, “computers” were only used for calculations in math. She was the first person to think of the idea to expand the “computer” to much more than simple calculations. For example, Ada thought it would be a good idea to expand the computer to be used for music and space science.

The Analytical Engine

Now, this seems odd, considering that she lived in the 19th century and computers weren’t even invented yet. But there was a machine called the Analytical Engine which was created by Charles Babbage.

Babbage was Ada’s mentor while he was creating it and Ada was 17 at the time. The Engine was basically a simplified, mechanical version of the computer. Ada helped Babbage to translate Italian mathematician Luigi Menabrea’s papers on the Analytical Engine. While she did this she also added notes to the papers–the amount written was about three times the amount of what was written on the papers themselves. For these notes, she was considered the first computer programmer.

Details

One interesting fact about Ada is that she was the only legitimate child of Lord Byron. Also, Lady Byron taught Ada mathematics only because she did not want her inheriting her father’s insanity. Something of relevance is that she got married to William King in 1835 when she was 20. After this her full name was Augusta Ada King instead of Augusta Ada Byron. She also became the Countess of Lovelace because William was the 1st Earl of Lovelace. Also, Ada was named after Lord Byron’s half-sister, Augusta.

Charles Babbage was creating the Analytical Engine and something called the Difference Engine. The Difference Engine was only for pure calculation, unlike the Analytical Engine. The Analytical Engine, on the other hand, was a general-purpose  computer (a mechanical computer that did not yet contain many of the things computers contain today). 

Paradox

Ada Lovelace and Albert Einstein are different in many ways. First of all, Ada was born in 1815 and Einstein was born in 1879. Also, the most significant fact about them is that Einstein created the theory of relativity, while Ada was the first computer programmer. And Einstein was German and Ada was English. Ada studied mathematics while Einstein studied physics. Ada worked with Charles Babbage and many other famous scientists and mathematicians at the time that Einstein was not working with.

Ada Lovelace’s parents had a complicated relationship before divorcing. Albert Einstein’s parents did not divorce. Ada’s father was a famous poet and Einstein’s father and uncle founded an electrical company, two very different occupations. Ada Lovelace and Albert Einstein have many differences. But, when you think about it, they are very similar too.     

Parallel

Ada Lovelace has a lot in common with Marie Curie. First off, they are, of course, renowned women scientists. They were both born in the 1800s. Marie Curie and Ada Lovelace both sadly died from illness (Ada from cancer, Curie from Aplastic anemia). Another parallel is that each of their childhood conditions were not really good. (Ada- parents divorced in the same year she was born. Curie- family lost valuables, money, and property.) This shows Ada Lovelace and Marie Curie have many similar traits

Intellectual Leadership

Ada Lovelace showed intellectual leadership in quite a few ways. The thing is, she showed leadership by showing all of the other intellectual traits as well (courage, aggressiveness, humility)! First of all, Ada showed courage. In her time, it was not at all common for women to be studying math and science and for them to be working with renowned scientists such as Charles Babbage. It was courageous to continue studying in that area when it was mostly common for the men. She was a very bright student.

Secondly, she showed aggressiveness by experimenting with ideas. She thought about the subject of computers from many different angles that many other people had not seen. This shows her intellectual aggressiveness. Finally, humility. Ada never would brag about her work and the notes she took on the papers she was translating. As I said, they were three times the length of the actual papers written. But did she brag about it? No. That is three reasons for how she shows intellectual leadership.

The Main Idea

Ada Lovelace was a very important person for the future of technology building. She first thought of the idea to expand computers to more than calculation, like  music, entertainment, and important scientific work. The notes that she took while translating papers on the Analytical Engine were later considered the first computer programming.

This is an enormous achievement for the advancement of technology. Charles Babbage was only planning to have the computer do translating and calculating mechanically, while Ada wanted to have the computer be used for science studies and music. This relates to the theme of change because change is necessary for growth. And change and growth is exactly what Ada Lovelace brought forward with her unique and different ideas.     

Contribution

As you know, Ada Lovelace is considered the first computer programmer. Now, this of course is a major accomplishment for technology. So, in this case, this will definitely be seen as a contribution. A contribution to everyone’s future in technology. I believe that she first got influenced by her mother, Lady Byron, to take up learning mathematics and science and logic. Sadly, the wonderful contribution she was making was cut short when she died in 1852. Although she died at the age of 36, her contribution lives on to this day.
